The Easy-Peasy Way To Make Your Own Versatile Travel Dress

By , November 25th, 2014

Today, many airlines charge fees for checked luggage. With this rule in mind, I’ve become a big fan of traveling light. I carry one carry-on bag and that’s it. However, my new minimalist mantra clashes with my overflowing closet. How to maximize space without sacrificing style? Enter the versatile travel dress. This popular style is sophisticated, playful and most importantly easy to make! Best of all, no sewing experience needed.

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric (soft polyester knit is best. Fabric needs to be stretchy)
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread

Create your own travel dress

Step 1

Cut two rectangles, the length and a half of your body. For the width, measure from the breastbone to the middle of your underarm. These will be your straps.

Step 2 (optional)

Cut a band, a little wider than your waist measurement. This piece is optional and can be used for a more finished look. However, you can easily mimic a waistband with the two straps. The infinity dress is THAT versatile.

Step 3

For the skirt, measure from your waist to desired length. I went for a mid-length but if I were to do it again, I’d certainly opt for a maxi dress. Once the circle is cut, take your waist measurement and cut a smaller circle.

Step 4

Turn your skirt inside out. Overlap the two straps in a 45-degree angle. Align the strap’s edges with the skirt’s inner edge. Sew the straps to the skirt.

Tip: if you have access to a sewing machine, I highly recommend using it. The result will be sturdier. However, it is absolutely possible to make this dress with a travel hand sewing kit. If you choose the latter, make sure to go over your seam a couple of times to avoid a humiliating wardrobe malfunction.

Voila!

And there you go; your very own versatile travel dress! The great thing about this style is not only its adaptability but its low maintenance features: wrinkle free dress and a fast-drying option for a day at the beach.  You can easily pack this dress in your purse or carry-on and wear it while sightseeing or having dinner on a cruise ship!
